Well, yesterday turned out to be a pretty fun day indeed.
Pretty much every Sunday morning I head to church, The Second Congregational Meeting House Society, Unitarian Universalist, where I sing in the choir. I feel pretty lucky because on a whole the services there are generally quite musical, which makes getting up early on a weekend morning worth it for me. This past Sunday however was particularly special for those of us who are musically inclined—the service entitled “The Power of Song”— the program was almost all music! We had quite a variety of talent, ranging from the vocal stylings of a young lady who is playing the title role in an upcoming community production of Annie, to a fantastic professional performer (whose name I forget, having lost the program. FTL, apologies) who did a song in the activist style of Woodie Gutherie condemning the harmful practice of hydrofracking. And most exciting for me of course, I got to sing too!
I performed “And This is My Beloved” from the musical Kismet by Robert Wright and George Forrest. (If you’re a classical music fan you might recognize the melody from the third movement of String Quartet No. 2 by Alexander Borodin, one of several works by the composer that were adapted by Wright and Forrest for Kismet)
Honestly, this didn’t go quite as well as I’d hoped. It just doesn’t sound as polished as I’d wanted (I blame the baby making noise in the background and distracting me <.<) Even so, I’m fairly pleased, and events later in the day totally made up for any disappointment I might have had.
Excitingly, my friend Amanda returned home yesterday after being away for six whole weeks. Rejoice! In celebration we headed out for the evening to do some karaoke singing. Given that it was a Sunday the bar was a little bit less crowded than one would usually encounter on a summer night around here, but there was still plenty of good company to be had. Amanda and I both competed in the night’s karaoke contest and frankly the competition was pretty stiff, but apparently my rendition of Heart’s “Alone” was particularly stirring, because (and to my surprise)…. I won! (Yay!)

What a day. :)
